Classic style sofas - what to look for when buying

When choosing a classic style sofa for the living room, we can be sure that it will provide us with comfort and cosiness, together with timeless design. When deciding on your furniture, you should consider not only the form, but also the size and type of upholstery. Most models of sofas in a classic style are spacious to ensure comfort for all the family. The size of the piece of furniture should be carefully considered to allow you to adjust it to the size of the room though. Classic sofas are available in 2 seat versions, which do not take up much space, and are therefore ideal for smaller living rooms. Whereas an open plan living room is ideal for a larger three-seater sofa, combined with matching armchairs and maybe additional sofas, if the space allows.

Classic sofas are available in different types of upholstery. Soft velvet gives the furniture a luxurious feel and co-ordinates well with metallic accessories, especially in Scandinavian style interiors. A sofa upholstered in vegan leather exudes elegance and is also easy to clean. Choosing a dark fabric can add drama and intensity to the interior, whereas a lighter shade will give a fresher feel. Any of these fabrics, and more, will complete a classic style living room.

When looking for the right piece of furniture, as well as measuring the space the sofa or chair will occupy, you should also pay attention to the height of the back. A good tip is to measure the sofa you have currently and compare it to the dimensions of the new one. This will help you decide whether it is a low backed sofa you prefer, like the Chesterfield, or a higher back like the Bari. Look at how you use the arms on your sofa. Then decide whether you prefer a wide armrest where you can rest a drink, or a lower arm design, that has a more relaxed feel. Some models also come with additional cushions to offer further comfort and support for your neck and back. Don’t forget to consider the style and height of the legs too, as a longer leg will expose more floor, giving a greater illusion of space adding lightness to the room.

Why should I choose a classic style sofa for my living room?

Classic style has stood the test of time for many reasons. It offers not just comfort, but a re-assuring charm, elegance, and welcoming space. Although decorating trends may change, traditional living rooms will always be in style and therefore the description of timeless becomes unquestionably apparent. One of the characteristics of traditional style is very often symmetry. So, whilst rooms aren't always made up of perfect mirror images, they are usually very well-balanced, such as an opposing pair of sofas, or two matching armchairs.

If you are not a lover of bold and bright colours, then classic style is for you. We all know rules can be broken, but it is unlikely that anything overly bright or neon is usually seen in an interior of this type. Deep shades of reds, blues, greens, and yellows are right at home, as are every possible shade of white, taupe, beige and grey. Upholstery in these colours will remain fashionable despite changing trends in interiors. Just a change of accessories is enough to refresh the living room when things start to become tired or visually dull.
